The Banner Lecture Series, endowed in honor of Charles F. Bryan, Jr., is in its twenty-ninth year.
Join us at the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) for a Banner Lecture, "A Saga of the New South: Race, Law, and Public Debt in Virginia", by Brent Tarter, on Thursday, March 16 at noon.
Before the Civil War, Virginia,
like other southern states, amassed a large public debt while striving to
improve transportation infrastructure and stimulate economic development. Brent
Tarter investigates the controversy over the repayment of debt, and the many
obstacles reformers faced in the South, decades after the Civil War.
Tickets are $6/adults, $5/seniors, and $4/students and children.
Admission is free for VHS members and Richmond Times-Dispatch readers with a Press Pass coupon. The Banner Lecture Series is sponsored by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Tickets are available for sale the
day of the lecture. Mr. Tarter will sign copies of his book after the lecture.
Lunches are available for purchase after the lecture.
We are pleased to offer audio and video recordings of the lecture series on our website for VHS members and friends who cannot attend. Please visit our video and audio web page to search and enjoy past lectures at the VHS.
