Annual Fund
The Annual Fund helps underwrite the daily operations of the
VHS. These include innovative educational
programs, compelling lectures and exhibitions, long-standing research and
publication initiatives, professional and web-based services, and the
conservation and preservation of an incomparable
collection—projects that help advance our mission and make the past
accessible to everyone.

More information
As a private institution, not a state agency, the VHS depends
on charitable contributions to fulfill its educational mission.
The VHS is the oldest, continuously operating cultural
institutions in the state and one of the oldest historical societies in the
country.
In 2004, the Virginia General Assembly formally designated
the VHS as the Official State Historical Society, recognizing it for its
“special commitment to the Commonwealth’s schoolteachers and their students,”
its stewardship of collections, and its ongoing development of comprehensive
programs.
The VHS also is the only southern member of the Independent
Research Libraries Association.
The VHS recently received reaccreditation by the American Association of Museums—the highest national recognition for a museum and a designation only awarded to one in ten museums in the country. This status signifies excellence to the museum community, funders, outside agencies, governments, and to the museum-going public.
